Lifestyle & Aspirations
Senegal has a rich, diverse culture and Dakar in particular is a
vibrant, cosmopolitan city of music, street markets, artistic expression
and long beaches. In northern Senegal, the city of Saint-Louis, with
attractive colonial architecture, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Typical activities in these cities include café culture and music
festivals and bars; shopping in the markets; fitness and running on the
beach (there are several excellent running clubs in Senegal), basketball
and soccer and Lamb, a form of wrestling. Senegal has a strong
tradition of oral literature and more recently, film, as well as a busy
arts scene producing jewellery, tapestry, gold and fashion.
Much of the typical Senegalese’s spare time is spent with family. Family time takes priority over everything and workers may take several days off every year for weddings and funerals of family members who may be best seem distant. Both unemployment and the percentage of the population living below the poverty line are extremely high at over 40%, so the concept of leisure time takes on a different meaning for many. Casual labour, holding down more than one job and supporting a family leave little time for personal hobbies and interests.
